Virgil I. Grissom Boyhood Home Open To Public Saturday

Last updated on Friday, August 1, 2014

(MITCHELL) - Virgil I. Grissom Inc., the governing board of the Virgil I. Grissom Boyhood home, will have Grissom’s boyhood home open for the public Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gus Grissom, who grew up in Mitchell, was one of the original NASA Project Mercury astronauts, test pilot and a United States Air Force pilot. He was the second American to fly in space, and the first member of the NASA Astronaut Corps to fly in space twice.

Grissom was killed along with fellow astronauts Ed White and Roger Chaffee during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (then known as Cape Kennedy), Florida. He was the first of the Mercury Seven to die. He was also a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and, posthumously, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.

The home has been taken back to the era when Grissom was growing up.

If anyone has items that relate to Grissom's boyhood or the home during the 1930s or early 1940s, contact Board President Steve Grissom at stevenpgrissom@gmail.com.

Send donations for maintaining the home to Virgil I. Grissom Inc., 407 S. Sixth St., Mitchell.
