10-Digit Dialing Mandate Extended

Last updated on Friday, August 8, 2014

(UNDATED) - People in the 812 area code will be able to dial 7-digits a little while longer.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission has delayed the switch to mandatory 10-digit dialing for local calls.

The IURC says the change is due to, ".. concerns regarding the ability of critical segments of the business community and telecommunications providers to prepare for the switch to mandatory dialing, specifically those serving the medical and law enforcement industry."

The IURC says public health and safety is a top priority.

No word on when 10-digit dialing will go into effect, but the IURC says the switch will still happen.
