(SALEM) - The 2013 Awareness Washington County class hopes to have what they need to start the repairs to the courthouse bell tower soon.
The group has been raising funds for about a year, to make repairs to the bell tower, but they are just short of having enough money to do that.
The Salem Leader reports, the class has raised $2,600 in donations and have a $8,000 grant from Awareness Washington County - a total of $10,600, but they need $13,000 to do the repairs.
After the funds are raised it will take about six weeks to repair the bell tower.
At first they believed the bell was cracked, but they learned is was the cables that needed replaced, which is more expensive task.
Smith's Bell and Clock Service in Mooresville will be doing the work on the tower.
Those wishing to donate can mail their checks to Repair the Bell Fund through Awareness Washington County, P.O. Box 212, Salem, Ind., 47167. Be sure to put "Repair the Bell" in the memo line. Because the donations are being sent to an Awareness Washington County account, the donations are tax deductible.
T-shirts costing $10 are also available at Cheddar Depot and from any 2013 Awareness Washington County graduate.
Brochures about the project are available at the Chamber of Commerce Office, First Savings Bank, Leader Publishing Company and Salem Title.
