Police Trade Badges For Aprons To Raise Funds For Special Olympics

Last updated on Friday, August 22, 2014

(UNDATED) - Law Enforcement officers and Special Olympics Indiana are teaming up with six Texas Roadhouse restaurants to benefit more than 11,000 Hoosier athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Tip-A-Cop will take place between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., from August 25 to 27.

The event, part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), will start at the Richmond and Columbus Texas Roadhouse branches, before visiting Greenwood and Southport, culminating in a final evening at Terre Haute and Bloomington.

Law enforcement officers, joined by Special Olympics athletes, will trade badges for aprons as they collect tip donations at Texas Roadhouse locations. All money donated goes directly to Special Olympics Indiana. The head of the state police, Superintendent Doug Carter, said, "The Indiana State Police, and law enforcement in general, have a bond with Special Olympics and are pleased to be part of the tip-a-cop fundraising event." This year continues to build the strong law enforcement Tip-A-Cop tradition benefitting Special Olympics Indiana.

"The continued and growing support of the Indiana State Police has been remarkable," Special Olympics Indiana CEO Mike Furnish said. "Through their work with this event, Texas Roadhouse has also become a fantastic partner."

As an LETR signature fundraising event, Tip-A-Cop invites the public to attend one of the selected Texas Roadhouse locations, without the need of a promotional flyer, and chose from the full menu. Customers are encouraged to donate gratuities, a "Special tip", to law enforcement "celebrity waiters;" in doing so they will help to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Indiana and the services the organization provides to adults and children with intellectual disabilities. Throughout its history, the Tip-A-Cop fundraising event, with various restaurant partners, has generated over $2.5 million for Special Olympics.

Tip-A-Cop will take place from 4 p.m.-10 p.m. at the following Texas Roadhouse branch locations:

Monday, August 25

Tuesday, August 26

Wednesday, August 27
