Oolitic Town Hall Roof To Be Replaced

(OOLITIC) - The Oolitic Town Council Monday night awarded Reliable Roofing with the contract to replace the roof on Town Hall.

The town received two bids one from Smoot Construction for $15,211.90 and one from Reliable Roofing for $13,980.

The council voted to accept the lower bid.

The town also received a bid form a 1980 Ford Fire engine for $501.50 and a bid for a road sander for $200. The council rejected both those bids.

"If we take it to the junk yard we can get more for them," said Councilman Bill Kendall.

Councilman Charlie Luther agreed.

In other business:

* The council held a public meeting to gather public input on the 2015 proposed budget. The proposed tax levy is $141,957. The proposed estimated total budget for 2015 is $375,349 but from this years budget of $131,043.

* Council President Delvin Nikirk meet with Department of Natural Resources about possibly taking over the Avoca Fish Hatchery. Nikirk representing the town council told officials there was no way the town could afford the upkeep.

* The council will meet with members of the Indiana Department of Transportation within the next two weeks to do a walk through of the Safe Route To Schools sidewalk project.

* Councilman Luther brought up the parking and traffic problem at the schools when school is dismissed.

"This is an accident waiting to happen," Luther says. "Something has got to be done. We need to contact the superintendent and principal about this situation."

Luther says motorist are stopping in the middle of the roadway causing a traffic hazard.

Councilman Kendall agreed and requested that the Oolitic Police Department start ticketing violators.

"If you get into these people's pockets this kind of stuff will stop," Kendall added. "it is a traffic violation and they should be ticketed. Write them a ticket and this will stop."

Marshal Jon Jeffries agreed that the school needs to do something to stop the problem.
