(SALEM) - The City of Salem is seeking more money to cover the escalating costs of running their animal shelter and hope to tap into the pocketbook of the county’s township trustees.
Washington County uses the shelter, contributing $35,000 annually, a fee that was re-negotiated about two years ago. The total cost to operate the shelter is $120,000. Officials plan to meet with the trustee's association to seek funding.
Rick Stewart, one of the city's animal control officers says 70 to 80 percent of the animals brought to the shelter are from the county.
Last year, Stewart says the shelter took in 1,500 animals. During the first six months of this year, about 800 animals have been taken in, many of them cats.
