(UNDATED) - Four of the top five highly-paid employees in the state, according to The Indianapolis Star, are college coaches.

Indiana University men's basketball coach Tom Crean was No. 1 with $2.9 million in compensation.

For these top-tier coaches, compensation ranged from $222,000 to almost $3 million.

Two Daviess County surgeons are also in the top 20 highest-paid public employees listed. Marcus Thorne and John Clayton were number 10 and 19 respectively.

Thorne according to state data earned $710,919 in 2013 while Clayton earned $557,116 last year.

According to information from the state, the list of compensation may not include workers, like some physicians, who are paid by outside companies, or have companies of their own.

Also several physicians and some nurses are not on the state list because they have their own practices or work for another organization contracted by the hospital.

While Daviess County had two doctors on The Star's list, Dearborn County Hospital had four doctors on the top 20 list. The hospital told The Star in a statement the doctor's salaries are in line with other hospitals.
