(PAOLI) - The Orange County Historical Society is hosting a tour of the historic Thomas Elwood Lindley House during their 39th annual ice cream social Sunday.
The event from 1p.m. to 5 p.m. will feature music and desserts and beverages and tours of the Lindley House and gardens. The home is located on Willow Creek Road in Paoli.
Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
The event is free, but free-will donations would be appreciated. The money will be used to maintain the Lindley House.
The musical line-up includes Old Stuff, featuring David and Mary Byrne and Alice Bennett, scheduled to begin playing at 1 p.m. They will be followed by the Crawford County Community Band, led by Ted Linton, at 2 p.m. Lick Creek will entertain at 3 p.m. Lick Creek features Alice Wootton, Bill Wheeler, Eric Harmon and Bill Nevels. The last act to perform will be Late For Supper, featuring Pete Webb and Jessie Smith, playing at 4 p.m.
When Paoli was established, the Lindley Family played a role in its development by selling a portion of their land for $800. The land became the county seat and has contributed greatly in building the town of Paoli as it is today. Court activities were also carried out in the home of William Lindley, Jr. until a courthouse was built.
The Lindleys were granted land when Jonathan Lindley and his family came to Orange County from North Carolina in 1812. His grandson, Thomas Elwood Lindley, went on to become an influential Quaker, serving as a member of the State Legislature. The Thomas Elwood Lindley House was given in 1974 to the Orange County Historical Society by great-great-grandson H. Carl Thompson and Dorothy Farlow Thompson.
The Thomas Elwood Lindley House was used as a farm house before and this was reflected when the property was restored to showcase the period between 1850 and 1869 that it was inhabited. It was in 1985 when house was officially listed as part of the National Register of Historic Homes.
The Lindley House is on Willow Creek Road, about one mile west of the Paoli courthouse square. Anyone interested in local history and heritage is encouraged to become member of the Orange County Historical Society.
