(BLOOMINGTON) - A grant will pay to have the deer killed during a cull at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve this fall.
Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry will be paying the bill to have the deer process the meat.
Ian Munnoch, coordinator for the Monroe and Brown counties chapter of Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry says the nonprofit recently received a $57,000 grant from the Sportsman's Benevolence Fund through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. He estimates that $7,000 will go toward processing the deer.
Sharpshooters with White Buffalo will be harvesting the deer, who are destroying the vegetation at the preserve. Officials are hoping to harvest around 5,000 pounds of venison - this is assuming 100 deer are taken, which is what the contract with White Buffalo calls for.
An average deer provides about 50 pounds of meat, but because the area is overpopulated and overgrazed the deer may be smaller.
All of the deer killed will be taken to KW Custom Deer Processing where it will be ground and packaged and then donated to Hoosier Hills Food Bank who will distribute the meet to all of the food bank's 94 partner agencies in six counties.
