GE Begins Demolition Of Linton Building

Last updated on Thursday, August 28, 2014

(LINTON) - General Electric has begun the demolition process on the building it abandoned in July of 1994 to make way for what Linton Mayor John Wilkes hopes will be a new industrial building.

Wilkes says demolition will start at the end of this month and will be completed by the end of the year.

The work is being done by Sabre Demolition from New York state and, according to Wilkes, when completed it will leave behind nothing but a grassy spot amid the other industrial buildings that currently occupy the area.

Once the demolition is complete GE and City of Linton will market the 20-acre property.

City officials were hoping the company would renovate the building, but GE opted to demolish the eye sore, that has become unusable and unsafe.

The agreement to demolish the building came after the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and General Electric were able to come to an agreement on the cleanup procedure surrounding the building and any toxic or other environmental impact it could leave behind.
