Last updated on Monday, August 4, 2014

(SEYMOUR) - Four people were injured Saturday when they were struck by a truck pulling two wagons full of campers and counselors at Spring Hill Camp on State Road 258.

A 7-year-old Indianapolis boy, whose name was not released, suffered serious injuries and was flown by helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children.

According to Jackson County police, the boy suffered a broken collar bone, broken ribs, a laceration to a lung and some broken teeth.

A 35-year-old man, who is a camp counselor, and two other boys from the Indianapolis area -- a six year old and a seven-year-old were taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for treatment.

According to police, the four were injured when a 2004 GMC pickup truck brakes failed while coming down a hill. The truck was pulling two wagons loaded with campers and counselors.

The driver, 21-year-old Ellen Guse of Columbus, was unable to get the truck to stop.

Guse was able to avoid striking another truck/tram combination that was stopped at the bottom of the hill by driving off the road into a grassy area on the side of a dam.

That's when three campers and the counselor who were walking in that grassy area were injured.

Police say the counselor was able to get two of the three campers out of the way, but not before he was struck in the back.

The counselor was treated for back pain while the 6-year-old was treated for a bump on his head. The other 7-year-old sustained a wrist injury.

Assisting at the scene were officers from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and emergency personnel with Hamilton and Pershing township fire departments.
