Flashing Yellow Arrows Planned For Ind. 37 At Main Street In Mitchell

Last updated on Thursday, August 7, 2014

(MITCHELL) - Starting on or after Monday, Indiana Department of Transportation traffic crews will install a new left-turn signal at the north junction of State Road 37 and State Road 60 (Main Street).

The signal will provide a flashing yellow arrow for S.R. 37 traffic turning left onto Main Street.

The flashing yellow arrow will allow left-turning traffic to yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

Flashing yellow arrow signals improve efficiency by using cross-traffic gaps to allow more left turns. When waiting in a dedicated left-turn lane, traffic may first see a flashing yellow arrow, depending upon signal phasing. Should there not be suitable gaps in oncoming through traffic and sensors detect cars waiting to turn left, the flashing yellow arrow could change to a steady green arrow. This would stop oncoming traffic, allowing a "lagging" protected left turn at the end of the signal cycle.

National research has shown that the flashing yellow signal is more intuitive for drivers, results in fewer crashes and moves traffic more efficiently at an intersection. The signals are being introduced nationwide and have been adopted by most states. INDOT installed the first flashing yellow arrow signals in Indiana last year and plans to replace most of its five-section or "doghouse" left-turn signals with the new four-section signals featuring a flashing yellow arrow.

More information about the flashing yellow left-turn arrow is available on INDOT's web site at www.in.gov/indot/3202.htm.
