Last updated on Monday, August 25, 2014

(DUBOIS CO.) - Dubois Volunteer Firefighters were called to a barn on fire at Skyview Farms, in the 2900 block of East County Road 725 North at 11:12 Thursday morning.

The farm raises layer hens for Wabash Valley Produce in Dubois, who also owns the farm.

Firefighters from Dubois, Haysville and Celestine and Lost River and Madison Township and Orange County Rural 2 responded to the blaze. Assistance also came from Simple Transport out of Dubois with two semi tankers responding to the scene.

The barn, which was about 50 feet-by-500-feet, was used to store manure from the two barns that were about 100 feet to each side of it. The barn to the south was full of birds. Firefighters were able to keep the from spreading and none of the chickens in the building were harmed.

Knies Construction brought a trackhoe to help tear down what was left of the building.

And Memorial Hospital Ambulance Service was on scene as well and assisted in cooling firefighters off.

Firefighters were on the scene for more than five hours.

Firefighters believe the fire started from spontaneous combustion of the manure inside the building.

The structure was an entire loss.
