Woman Assaulted During Home Invasion

Last updated on Thursday, August 21, 2014

(BLOOMINGTON) - A man was arrested after he entered a woman’s home on the westside of Bloomington and assaulted her while she slept.

Bloomington Police arrested 42-year-old Andrew W. Carie on charges of attempted rape, a level 3 felony, burglary, a level 4 felony and criminal confinement, a level 6 felony.

Because of Carie's past criminal history, the charge of being a habitual offender could be filed against Carie. If found guilty, as many as 20 years could be added to his sentence.

According to Bloomington Police Capt. Joseph Qualters, officers were called the 1200 block of West Seventh Street at 3 a.m. Wednesday morning after a report of an intruder inside a home.

A 30-year-old female told police that she woke up to find a man lying on top of her with his hand over her mouth.

The woman pushed the man off of her, screamed and the man fled.

The woman also fled the home and was found outside when officers arrived.

She was placed in a police vehicle for her safety as officers checked the area for Carie. As officers checked the rear of the residence, they heard rustling in nearby bushes and found Carie holding a flashlight.

Carie told police he was looking for the man that police were looking for and that he had attempted to chase the man, but he got away.

Once Carie was detained, officers continued checking the residence and discovered an open bathroom window and it appeared that potted plants had been removed from the window sill and placed outside. Mud prints were found on the floor just below the bathroom window and mud prints were also found in the bedroom area where the victim had been sleeping.

Carie had previously informed the officers that his jacket containing identification could be found on the side of the victim's home.

Officers found the jacket on the same side of the house as the open bathroom window.

An Evidence Tech was contacted to photograph and process the point of entry and the victim's bedroom area.

Carie was transported to the Bloomington Police Department for questioning and later arrested and taken to the Monroe County Jail. Carie's bond has been set at $100,000 surety and $1,000 cash.

Quarters says no connection has been made between this incident and the attempted sexual assault on the B-Line Trail that was reported on Monday.

During that attack, a 19-year-old woman reported that a man wearing a ski mask and latex gloves grabbed her while running on the B-Line trail around 7:40 a.m. Monday.

The woman told police that the man forced her off the trail and threatened to sexually assault her. No sexual assault took place, though she had bruises and scratches on her upper leg. Police say the attempted assault happened between Country Club Drive and a warehouse facility south of Grimes Lane near pole 22 on the trail.

Two witnesses told police they saw a man riding a BMX bicycle in the area. Police found that man who matched the description of witnesses and questioned him, however, the man has been released without charges.

Both incidents remain under investigation.
