(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County commissioners heard a presentation Tuesday from Mike Keeven, of DLZ, about an ADA Transaction Plan they have developed for the county to meet the federal guidelines for the American’s Disability Act
If the county does not meet the ADA standards and does not have an ADA Transaction Plan in place the Federal Highway Administration and the Indiana Department of Transportation could withhold funding for highway and bridge construction.
The commissioners asked Keeven in December to gather information on the estimated cost and requirements for the project and report back to the commissioners which he did Tuesday.
The commissioners took the proposal under advisement because Commissioner Bill Spreen was not present at the meeting.
"We all three need to take a look at this and discuss it before we make a decision," Commissioner President David Flinn said.
In other buisness:
* Sheriff Sam Craig reported there were 111 inmates at the county jail, of those 3 were Department of Correction holds and 25 were females. He also addressed safety concerns about the radio tower in the parking lot of the jail.
"Now that the annex is gone, it is an issue we need to address," Craig told the commissioner.
Craig would like to put a fence up around the tower to prevent individuals from climbing on the tower or vehicles hitting it.
Flinn would like to see a concrete barrier placed around the tower.
Craig will seek estimates on what that would cost and get back with the commissioners.
* Lawrence County Highway Superintendent David Holmes says Mount Pleasant bridge is open and crews have begun the demolition of the old bridge.
Crews will also be tearing down and building a new bridge on Tunnelton-Dennison Road. SLR will be building the bridge. Holmes says crews will begin demolition next week, with construction on the replacement bridge to begin at the end of next week, weather permitting.
The county also received the Fracture critical assessments on truss Bridge 52 in Fort Ritner and Bridge 54 on Jasper McKeaigg Road.
The Lawrence County Commissioners approved a bid from SLR to build a new bridge on Tunnelton-Dennison Road. Holmes is hoping to have estimates for repairs on those two bridges next week.
* Amanda Pardue, of Centerstone, presented the commissioners with their annual report.
Centerstone, a not-for-profit provider of community-based behavioral healthcare, offers a full range of mental health services, substance abuse treatment and intellectual and developmental disabilities services.
That report states that the facility received $166,524 in tax dollars from the community. The center provide residents with no insurance or financial resource $322,205 in care. The facility paid $1,119,163 in salaries, fringe benefits and operational expenses in Lawrence County.
