(UNDATED) - The Bloomington-Bedford area is one of four possible locations for a new high school for Catholic students being considered by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis is looking for an area south of Indianapolis.

Greg Otolski, director of communications for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis says enrollment at schools that serve students south of Indianapolis in elementary and middle school have been on the rise, and there are few high schools for them to attend without a long commute.

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis currently is gathering information through parish meetings and surveys. It hopes to determine the amount of interest in a Catholic high school, how far people would be willing to drive, and what tuition range would be affordable.

St. Charles Borromeo, St. John the Apostle and St. Paul Catholic Center Center in Bloomington were among 13 parishes chosen to participate in focus group meetings to determine the viability of a high school south of Indianapolis. Members of St. Vincent de Paul in Bedford, St. Martin of Tours in Martinsville and St.Thomas More in Mooresville also were invited to share their perspectives.

Once all the data have been analyzed and reported, and a determination made about whether a new Catholic high school is needed, a site will be chosen to build a new school.

The Bloomington-Bedford area is one place that could be the site of a new school. Other locations being considered include the Columbus-Seymour area, a property owned by the archdiocese in Greenwood and a location on Whiteland Road between I-65 and Ind. 37.

Once information from parishes and surveys is gathered, the final decision on whether to build a high school south of Indianapolis will rest in the hands of Archbishop Joseph Tobin.

To follow the progress of the decision to open a high school, go to or find the High School Feasibility Study South of Indianapolis on Facebook.
