Orange County To House Lawrence Co. Female Inmates If Needed

Last updated on Tuesday, July 29, 2014

(PAOLI) - The Orange County has agreed to house female inmates from Lawrence County to avoid overcrowding at the Lawrence County Jail.

The agreement was made after the Lawrence County jail census, at times, has reached near capacity. Sheriff Craig says the facility can house 168 inmates and have room for 32 females. But the number of females being booked into the jail has increased over the last year, pushing the number to the limit, which has forced Sheriff Craig to find a solution before the numbers pushed the facility into a crisis situation.

Sheriff Sam Craig worked out an agreement with Orange County Sheriff Richard Dixon to house female inmates if the Lawrence County Jail reaches capacity.

Lawrence County will pay Orange County $35 a day per female inmate. If the need arises, Orange County will house up to 10 female inmates. Lawrence County will be responsible for transporting the inmates and will pay for any and all medical expenses that the inmate may require while being housed at the Orange County Jail.

Craig says it will only be a temporary stay until the inmate is scheduled to appear in court.
