Lawrence Co. Fair Queen To be Crowned Monday Night

(BEDFORD) - One of five young women will be crowned 2014 Lawrence County Fair Queen tonight.

This year's contestants are Megan Cheek, Mercedes Kruse, Brecken Prince, Allison Nicole Trevithick and Sarah Werley.

The pageant will begin at 7 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the entry fee is $2.

Last year, there was a junior pageant for girls in third to fifth grades. That's been replaced this year by the princess division for girls from ages 14-17. Four girls are competing to become the 2014 Lawrence County Fair princess they are Jaylyn Mackenzie Harmon, Morgan Lambrecht, Madison Abel and Katie Sons.

The escorts for the queen and princess contestants are: Paige Burton, Ella Chastain, Macey Lambrecht, Brooke Isabella Phipps, Hillary Amanda Prado, Sarah Elizabeth Prado, Savannah Jo Russell, Heather Haley Stigall, Kadence Thomas and Madisyn Thomas.

Four young women will walk away tonight with scholarships.

The queen receives $1,000, the first runner-up will receive $400, the second runner-up wins $200 and Miss Congeniality will be awarded $150. The winner of the princess division will earn $250.

2013 queen, Olivia Shirley, will be at the queen pageant and hand out trophies.

Megan Cheek

Age: 18
Grade: Senior at Bedford North Lawrence High School
Activities and hobbies: Member of the BNL varsity girls golf team; also outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and fishing
Honors: Has been accepted into Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis
Platform: "If I were selected to be queen, my platform would be setting a good example for younger girls. I want to be a role model who can encourage girls to be confident, bold and friendly. I want to create a program to help girls build self-esteem."
Goals: Majoring in biology at IUPUI with the aim of becoming a pediatric dentist.

Mercedes Kruse

Age: 19
Grade: Freshman at St. Mary of the Woods College
Activities and hobbies: Riding horses, reading, drawing, writing short stories
Honors: Walk with Excellence nominee, dean's list in college; National Honor Society and Beta Club in high school
Platform: "If I were selected as Lawrence County Fair Queen, my platform for the year would be to bring more awareness to the importance of spaying and neutering animals in Lawrence County."
Goals: Becoming a veterinarian who specializes in treating large animals.

Brecken Prince

Grade: Sophomore at Franklin College
Activities and hobbies: Crossfit, fishing, racing, painting; member of the outdoors club and participant in the dance marathon for Riley Hospital for Children
Honors: First Generation Scholar recipient
Platform: "Promoting healthy living through exercise and a balanced diet."
Goals: Becoming an elementary school teacher and opening her own restaurant.

Allison Nicole Trevithick

Age: 20
Grade: Junior at Indiana Wesleyan University
Activities and hobbies: Sewing, baking, backpacking, knitting; member of the IWU track and field team and a huddle leader with Fellowship of Christian Athletes
Honors: NAIA All-American as a high jumper, NAIA 2013-14 Scholar-Athlete
Platform: "As the Lawrence County queen I will promote the importance of volunteering in the local community. I will educate willing citizens on the various ways they can volunteer and the many organizations that accept helping hands."
Goals: Receiving a bachelor's degree in nursing in 2016 and continuing her education to become a family nurse practitioner.

Sarah Werley

Grade: Senior at Bedford North Lawrence High School
Activities and hobbies: Singing, reading, decorating cakes, making stained glass; member of Girls Scouts, National Honor Society, BNL swim team, Lawrence County Aquatics and BNL Symphony Orchestra
Honors: Captain and mental attitude award winner for the BNL swim team, 2013-14; first chair cello in BNL Orchestra; nominated for Outstanding 4-H'er
Platform: "To inform children and teens of the careers in Lawrence County (and Indiana as a whole), how to obtain those careers and how they benefit the community."
Goals: Studying aquatic biology at Ball State University and continuing into graduate school to study marine biology

Jaylyn Mackenzie Harmon

Grade: Sophomore, homeschooled
Activities and hobbies: 4-H, dog club, cat club, junior leaders, MPCC Youth Group, MPCC Nursery Worker, Heaven Nevaeh, volunteer at Becky's Place, Bertha's Mission and Westview Rehabilitation Center, MPCC Teen Cook Team, yearbook staff and Locks of Love.
Honors: Nominee for outstanding 4-Her of 2011, 2012 and 2014, she was the runner-up in 2011 and 2012.
Platform: "I have been volunteering at Becky's Place, a shelter for women and children. I would like to raise awareness for the needs thy have so they can continue to help women and children in need."
Goals: Attend Anderson University, complete the RN program and become a pediatric nurse.

Morgan Lambrecht

Grade: Sophomore at Bedford North Lawrence High School
Activities and hobbies: 4-H, Bedford Free Methodist Church, BNL varsity cheerleader, BNL varsity softball, student council, renaissance committee, Lawrence County fair board, Lawrence County junior leaders vice president, Lawrence County dairy club vice president, Indiana and National Guernsey Breeders Association.
Honors: Ranked No. 4 in the BNL class of 2016, second alternate in Suits and Coats at 2013 State Fair Fashion Review, Indiana State Fair Achievement Trip Winner, finalist for the 2014 Indiana Dairy Academy Member, 2013 freshman English Award, 2013 geometry award, 2013 history award, 2011 outstanding first year junio leader, Maxine Moore Award for outstanding first year 4-H.
Platform: "If chosen as princess, I will use my reign to promote literacy in young children by increasing support and awareness of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library of Lawrence County. This organization provides one book a month to children ages birth to 5 that are enrolled in the program."
Goals: Attend Purdue University and attend law school.

Madison Abel

Grade: Junior at Bedford North Lawrence High School
Activities and hobbies: Soccer team, 4-H dog club, sewing, running, life-guarding, designing and sketching clothes, making jewelry
Honors: National Honor Society, Beta Club, top 10 percent, National Academy of Future Physicians, medical scientists nominee
Platform: "I would like to be an advocate against drug abuse in our community."
Goals: Major in fashion design and merchandising, minor in economics.

Katie Sons

Grade: Eighth grade, Lawrence County Christian Homeschool
Activities and Hobbies: Bedford First Baptist youth group, Lord Richard Jones Chapter Children of the American Revolution, Girl Scout troop 60442, four-year members of 4-H, piano.
Honors: Blue ribbon for dress a doll, DAR History essay medal, Spring Mill photo contest first place.
Platform: "I would photograph and document all the graves of the Revolutionary War Patriots in Lawrence County."
Goals: To have a horse therapy farm for children with disabilities.
