(SPRINGVILLE) - Two people were injured and more than 16 tons of gravel were dumped on State Road 54 West near Rueter Lane Friday.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 57-year-old Gerald D. Speer of Mitchell suffered chest injuries including broken ribs and bleeding to his head.

The driver of the second vehicle, 20-year-old Andrew Kelley of Springville complained of neck pain.

According to police, Kelley was driving a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am east on State Road 54 and was slowing down to turn into his driveway when the vehicle was struck in the rear, forcing him to the side of the road.

Speer told police he didn't see the vehicle's turn signal or the vehicle slow to make the turn. He attempted to swerved but struck the car in the rear with the 1999 Mack RD dump truck he was driving.

The truck traveled off the roadway and overturned dumping around 16 tons of gravel onto the roadway.

Police spent several hours on the scene while the gravel was cleaned up.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department and Bedford Fire Department extrication team responded.
