Police Recover Stolen Vehicle After Finding It Torched

Last updated on Tuesday, July 29, 2014

(MITCHELL) - Officers from the Lawrence County and Mitchell Police Department are investigating the theft of a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox that was recovered after it was torched Saturday night.

According to Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig, the vehicle was reported stolen from the 800 block of Wesley Chapel Road.

"The owner believes it was taken sometime between 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday morning," Craig says.

The owner of the vehicle, Kyle Abel, posted on Facebook that she had returned home Friday and accidently left her keys on her porch on a wicker table.

Sometime during the night, someone attempted to steal Abel's daughter's bike from the porch and that is when she believes the criminal spotted her keys and stole the vehicle, but not before destroying her daughter's bike and leaving it in the road.

Officers recovered the vehicle Saturday night after receiving a report of a vehicle fire in the 1800 block of Lawrenceport.

Firefighters from Marion Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the blaze.

Craig says the case is still under investigation but they do have a suspect and criminal charges are pending.
