Loogootee Man Now Faces Habitual Offender Charge

(KNOX CO.) - A Loogootee man charged with rape and criminal confinement in Knox County now faces a habitual offender charge.

If found guilty, 30-year-old Mitchel Cunningham could face up to 60-years in prison on all charges.

Cunningham appeared for his initial hearing Wednesday in Knox County Superior Court-One. A preliminary plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf, The case is set for a November trial.

After receiving some help from the public, Vincennes Police arrested Cunningham earlier this month in connection with a rape that occurred on June 29th.

The habitual offender charge was filed due to Cunningham's earlier conviction on charges of theft, burglary, and fraud on a financial institution in Owen County.

Cunningham's bond was increased from $25,000 to $50,000 Wednesday as required under the state's habitual offender statute.
