Spring Mill State Park Lake Will Be Dredged Of Silt

Last updated on Tuesday, July 8, 2014

(SPRING MILL) - Bedford’s Dan Bortner, who oversees Indiana’s state parks and reservoirs, and the Spring Mill State Park staff will hold an open house from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Spring Mill Inn’s Lakeview Room.

Among the topics will be the Spring Mill Lake dredging project, which is scheduled to start this fall.

"We're excited about all the recent and upcoming improvements at Spring Mill State Park," Bortner says. "The open house is an opportunity for the public to learn about these changes and even experience some of them first hand."

The Spring Mill Lake Restoration Project involves dredging silt from the 23-acre lake. Dredging the lake will allow for better recreational access and improve the habitat for fish, turtles, otters, waterfowl and other wildlife.

The project is expected to cost $700,000 and happen in two phases over two or three years. Approximately 40,000 cubic yards of dredge material will be removed.

Park visitors will still be able to access the lake and fish, although some areas might be closed.

The lake was last dredged in 1977-78, when 14 cubic yards of sediment was removed.

The open house will also have information on new developments at the inn, including new management and new menu items. Open-house participants can taste-test some of those new menu items.

Spring Mill State Park (stateparks.IN.gov/2968.htm) is at 3333 State Road 60 East, in Mitchell.
