(CAMPBELLSBURG) - Junior class students at West Washington High School will be receive a Samsung Chromebook during the first nine weeks of school.
Kelly Williams, the director of e-learning at the high school, says that the school had a successful trial run with the devices in the English classroom last year, replacing the English textbook. English teachers were able to curate various free learning resources from the Web to create the curriculum for the classroom.
The Chromebook is a laptop that runs on browser-based operating system, which is primarily suited for Web purposes instead of running traditional PC software.
Students who receive Chromebooks during the next school year will be able to take devices home. But not every household has access to a broadband Internet connection.
But Williams says students who do not have Internet access at home, won't be left behind.
Teachers are making sure homework doesn't need Internet access to be completed.
To accommodate the technological evolution, the school spent $68,000 on infrastructure upgrades, which includes new 100 megahertz industrial wireless routers. Each router can support Internet usage for four classrooms, with 30 students in each classroom.
After this year's roll out of Chromebook devices for the junior students, the plan is to acquire devices for the additional five grades in junior high and high school.
