IU Health Bedford Hospital Offering Lung CT Scans For Smokers

Last updated on Thursday, July 31, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death not only in the US, but also in Indiana.

The incidence rate of lung cancer in Indiana is 15 percent, well above the national average. Like many cancers, early detection is one of the best ways we have to fight this disease. A 2011 National Cancer Institute-sponsored trial showed low-dose helical CT scans are able to detect cancer at earlier stages than X-rays, which leads to more lives saved.

IU Health Bedford Hospital is now offering lung CT scans to the community for just $99. To be eligible for the scans, you must be between 55 and 74, be a current or former smoker who smoked a pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years, must not have had a CT scan within the last 18 months, and, if a former smoker, must not have quit more than 15 years ago.

Following the scan, results will be sent to your physician and instructions for how to follow up with a smoking cessation specialist will be provided.

To determine if you're eligible and to schedule your scan, please call the hospital at (812) 275-1270.
