Orange County Teen Charged With Auto Theft And Arson

Last updated on Thursday, July 31, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig says they made an arrest in an auto theft and arson case they have been investigating.

"The arrest was made and the teen was charged with auto theft and arson and the probation department released the teen to his parents. In the mean time Orange County was also working a case on the same teen and filed charges and he was arrested and taken to the Jackson County Detention Center."

That teen is 15-year-old Clint Ferguson and he is accused of stealing a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer on Friday that belonged to his mother's boyfriend. According to Orange County officials, Ferguson stole the vehicle after a fight with his mother. The teen then fled Orange County.

At 5:54 p.m. on Friday, Mitchell police were called to assist an Orange County officer to recover the Blazer. The vehicle was found abandoned in a parking lot of Woodville Baptist Church, just off Ind. 37.

Then Lawrence County Police recovered a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox that was torched Saturday night. The vehicle, owned by Kyle Abel, was taken sometime between 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday morning.

Abel posted on Facebook that she had returned home Friday and accidently left her keys on her porch on a wicker table.

Sometime during the night, someone attempted to steal Abel's daughter's bike from the porch and that is when she believes the criminal spotted her keys and stole the vehicle, but not before destroying her daughter's bike and leaving it in the road.

Officers recovered the vehicle Saturday night after receiving a report of a vehicle fire in the 1800 block of Lawrenceport. Firefighters from Marion Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the blaze.

Then Lawrence County police received a report at 2:31 a.m. Sunday from a resident on Noe Road, east of Mitchell, reporting that two males were in her cornfield and she could hear a woman screaming.

Orleans Police Chief Roy McFarland says officers responded and found Ferguson and another male walking on Noe Road. The other male was released to his parents. Ferguson was arrested.
