Spoonman To Make Third Attempt At World Record

Last updated on Tuesday, June 3, 2014

(PEKIN) - The third time’s a charm. At least that’s what Steve “The Spoonman” Tankersley hopes.

On July 3rd, he will, for the third time, attempt to set the Guinness world record for most people playing the spoons at once.

He actually set a new record on his first attempt in 2011, during the Pekin Fourth of July celebration. He said 1,532 people played the spoons on that day. The following year, Japan beat that record with 1,970 people playing the spoons in Hawaii. Tankersley says it irritates him that Japan beat the United States in, of all places, Hawaii, the site of the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor.

To beat the record, Tankersley needs your help. He is counting on the patriotism of Washington County residents and those in the surrounding region to help in setting the new world record. Sign-in will begin at noon on Thursday, July 3, at the Pekin Park stage.

He will give a brief lesson in spoon playing and the attempt at the new world record will get underway, around 9 p.m., prior to the fireworks. He is hoping for more than 3,000 people to show to help set the record.
