One Arrested In Paoli Murders, Police Looking For Two Others

(MARENGO) - A suspect was arrested Wednesday night in connection to the Monday shooting north of Paoli.

At approximately 9:57 p.m., Indiana State Police investigators arrested 48-year-old Elbert Edward Brooks, of New Albany, on murder charges for his involvement in the shooting of Nicholas Fields, Cory Michael Harris, and Daniel Smitson.

56-year-old Fields and 25-year-old Harris, both suffered gunshot wounds to the head and died from their injuries, 29-year-old Smitson is recovering at the University of Louisville Hospita hospital after being shot in the mouth. He is expected to live.

The shootings were reported just after 1 p.m. on Monday in the 2200 block of Sandy Hook Road. Family members believe the shootings were drug related. State police believe all three men were shot with a handgun, but officers have not released other details, citing the ongoing investigation. Police are not speculating on any methods or how this happened or reasons why.

Investigators, combing through tips and leads and were led to an apartment complex at 285 South Main Street in Marengo, where Brooks was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators believe there are two other suspects involved in the case.

State Police are looking for 36-year-old James L. Davidson, of Marengo and 35-year-old John Carpenter for their involvement in the shooting.

Davidson was last seen in the Marengo area Wednesday evening.

Carpenter was last seen driving a red and grey 1991 Dodge Ram 150, single cab, two wheel drive pick-up truck with Indiana registration TK913LGC.

Both are considered armed and dangerous; do not approach them located, but call police.
