(BEDFORD) - Mike Chaveas is the new Forest Supervisor for the 202,000-acre Hoosier National Forest in south-central Indiana.
Chaveas came to the Hoosier from Oregon where he served as a District Ranger on the Mt Hood National Forest.
Chaveas has also worked on the Coconino National Forest in northern Arizona and for US Forest Service's International Programs office in Washington, DC where he coordinated agency efforts in Africa. Prior to joining the Forest Service, Chaveas was a Wildlife Biologist with the Peace Corps in Morocco.
Originally from Virginia, Chaveas received a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry and Wildlife Management (Wildlife Science concentration) from Virginia Tech and Master's degrees in Public Affairs and Environmental Science from Indiana University. His wife Kristi was raised in Indiana and the Chaveas family have three children.
"I am very excited to get back to Indiana and get to know the Forest," Chaveas says. "I look forward to continually learning how to balance all of the different needs and pressures that are placed upon our public lands, while ensuring they continue to provide benefits for generations to come."
Chaveas will work out of the Bedford office of the Hoosier National Forest and began work on June 23.
