Man Arrested After Entering Stranger's Home And Sleeping On Couch

Last updated on Thursday, June 26, 2014

(JASONVILLE) - 18-year-old Garrett Bartja of Jasonville will appear in Greene County Circuit Court Friday on charges of residential entry and illegal possession of an alcoholic beverage.

Bartija was arrested last Friday after allegedly falling asleep on a stranger's couch after a night of drinking at another residence. Jasonville police were called to a home after a man called the Greene County Sheriff's Department to report that an intruder was asleep on his couch.

The man told police his family had went to bed around 11:30 p.m. and when he woke at 4:30 a.m. to go to work he noticed someone lying on the couch but assumed it was his son. He then went to tell his son to go to bed and that is when he discovered Bartija, who remained asleep until police arrived.

Police say Bartija had entered the home through a window that was left unlocked. Bartija told police he had been drinking and had just moved to Jasonville and was confused as to where he was.

At the police station, Bartja told police he had been drinking vodka with friends until he passed out no later than 1 a.m. Bartja thought the house he was drinking at was a block away from the house he was found in, and that someone had obviously taken him there because he would not have just wandered into the house. Bartja told police that all he could remember was going to sleep and being woke by officers.

Bartja told police that entering a window did not sound like something he would do and stated that the only way he would have went inside the home was if someone told him it was okay.
