Improvements Continue To Get Ready For Englewood Students

Last updated on Tuesday, June 24, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Bedford North Lawrence School Board members voted in May to close Englewood School and shift those special needs students to Bedford North Lawrence and Stalker Elementary School classrooms that will be adapted to the needs of students.

The school was closed because Superintendent Gary Conner says the building needed "significant remediation" to remain in compliance with state and federal accessibility requirements and that make the needed changed would be "cost-prohibitive."

Steve Ritter says work has been taking place to get the classrooms ready for the change and they are now at the point where they need input from teachers. Conner says that whatever expenditures are needed to make the facilities properly serve the students will be made.

At the suggestion of new BNL Principal Dan Dyke, crews will be cutting doors to connect the various classrooms that will serve the former Englewood students. That will alleviate the need for teachers and students to use the hallway every time access is needed to a given room.
