Suspected Arson - Fire Destroys Vacant Home

Last updated on Friday, June 6, 2014

(HELTONVILLE) - A vacant home was destroyed Thursday and firefighters and police are investigating because it could be arson.

Firefighters and police are concerned because there was a rash of fires they believe were also arson that happened in the area in 2009 and 2010 on Knob Creek Road. A garage, outbuildings and mobile homes were among the half a dozen structures that were burned. A $5,000 award was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in the arsons, but Sheriff Sam Craig says no arrests were made.

Lawrence County Detectives were called to the scene and the State Fire Marshal was notified.

Firefighters from Pleasant Run and Marshall, Shawswick Volunteer Fire Departments, an IU Health Hospital ambulance and TOPES responded to the blaze at 6:23 a.m. and rushed to 3152 Coveyville Road.

The home, owned by Jack Eads, of Bloomington, was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters says no one lived in the home and there were no utilities hooked up. Firefighters have ruled out lightning, because there were no storms in the area.

Firefighters were called back to the home 6 p.m. after a neighbor reported there was smoke coming from the burnt home.
