Greene Co. Residents Can Get Rid Of Old Tires For Free

Last updated on Thursday, June 5, 2014

(GREENE CO.) -The Greene County Solid Waste Management District will hold a tire amnesty day from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the recycling center in Switz City.

That means Greene County residents can dispose of old tires at no cost. Officials hope the free disposal will help reduce the number of breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the West Nile virus is most commonly spread by infected mosquitoes. The disease, which has been detected in 48 states including Indiana, causes no symptoms in most people who become infected.

However, around one in five infected people develop a fever and other symptoms and fewer than one percent of infected people develop a serious and sometimes fatal illness.

Only Greene County residents may take part in the amnesty day, which will allow locals to drop off four off-the-rim passenger car or light pickup tires at no cost.

If you would like to drop off more than four tires of those types, you will be charged $2 for off-the-rim tires and $4 for on-the-rim tires.

Truck and tractor tires will not be accepted as part of the amnesty program.

Due to state grant requirements, people dropping off tires during amnesty day must answer two questions:

The recycling center is located on Baseline Road North in Switz City, and may be reached at 812-659-3788.
