GM PCB Site Cleaned Up, New Trench To Prevent Further Contaminations

Last updated on Monday, June 23, 2014

(BEDFORD) - The entire creek system near General Motors is now cleaned up of PCB contaminations.

Ed Peterson, project manager for the project, says the area has been restored and paperwork has been filed with the Environment Protection Agency, and officials are still monitoring creeks. But they are no longer collecting and treating the water.

The company also repaired some damage to Peerless Road that was caused from heavy trucks used at the cleanup sites.

Peterson said the company also bought houses on the nearby properties and demolished several of them.

The main goal for 2014 is to design and plan a groundwater collection trench around a permanent PCB storage vault built on GM property. The trench will about a mile long on the eastern side of the property and will be 25 feet to 30 feet deep, but parts of it might be as deep as 45 feet. The trench will catch any groundwater that may contain PCBs.

In 2015, the company hopes to launch and initial test for the trenching process.
