(SHOALS) - 60-year-old John Tow of Shoals has been charged with his son’s murder.
He is accused of fatally stabbing 32-year-old Jonathan Tow Sunday in the right side of the neck during a domestic fight Sunday at a mobile home in the 700 block of Doane Road. Police say the two had been arguing all day.
John Tow was arrested after he called 911 saying his son was bleeding to death. Emergency personal rushed to the home and Jonathon found outside the doorway. But they were unable to save him.
John Tow was arrested and is being held without bond on a charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
The father told police he had retrieved the knife from inside his home, and was going to use it to scare and/or intimidate his son. He told police he had "swung his arms with the knife in his hands at Jonathan."
According to an autopsy report, the knife severed Jonathan's carotid artery, and caused him to bleed to death. According to a forensic pathologist, the knife went into the victim's pharynx, and the blood loss would have been fatal within 30 seconds of the stabbing.
According to the autopsy report, the coroner believed more force was needed to cause the fatal stab wounds. Stiener says those results do not match the story the elderly Tow told police, or what police found at the scene.
This is not the first time the elder Tow has faced charges.
On Sept. 12, 2012, Tow was arrested for battery resulting in bodily injury, resisting law enforcement and possession of a controlled substance. In that case, a pretrial diversion agreement was filed, and the charges were dismissed after a year.
