(LAKE MONROE) - On Sunday a rescued bald eagle was set free at Lake Monroe.
The bird was discovered in Carmel after being injured in a winter ice storm. The male eagle suffered a concussion and spent the past two months rehabbing at the Indiana Raptor Center.
"You miss them; but on the other hand, the object of everything we do is to get these guys back where they go," said Laura Edmonds with the Indiana Raptor Center. "And to see a bald eagle take flight again...it's a mini-miracle for us. It's quite a thing to be a part of."
Right now, there are more than 100 pairs of bald eagles in the state thanks to efforts from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
The project began in 1985 and concluded in 1989. Over a period of five years, 73 bald eagle chicks were released at Monroe Reservoir in Monroe County. In 2012, there was an estimated 150-175 eagle nesting territories in Indiana.
