(PATOKA) - Nearly five years after the death of a bald eagle that lived at the Patoka Lake Visitor Center, another bald eagle now calls the center home.
Dana Reckelhoff, interpretive naturalist at Patoka Lake, introduced the newly acquired educational bird to the public Saturday.
The 11-month-old female eagle was born at Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. According to Reckelhoff, when the bird was 5 weeks old, the tree her nest was in collapsed and the eagle fell, breaking her right wing in three spots.
Too injured to return to the wild, the bird was cared for by licensed rehabilitators in Alaska and then California and was moved to Indiana in December. She then went through training to be used for educational purposes.
The new eagle is replacing an eagle named C52 who died in October of 2009 while undergoing surgery for an exploratory procedure.
