Last updated on Friday, May 9, 2014

(TAMPICO) - A wounded Jackson County deputy shot the man suspected of jumping from under a bridge and opening fire on him Wednesday night near Tampico.

46-year-old Officer Rick Meyer of Seymour and an unnamed suspect both were flown to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with what Lt. Andy Wayman described as non-life-threatening wounds. Meyers is listed in stable condition.

Meyer was shot twice while responding to a report of two suspicious people just south of Tampico in the 5800 block of State Road 39, Wayman said. Meyer managed to return fire and shot the suspect in the left arm, Wayman said.

Deputy Meyer was wearing a bulletproof vest, but was hit in both of his shoulders. The suspect was hit in the arm.

The suspect's condition is not known at this time.

The investigation is ongoing. The suspects' names have not been released.
