Bridge Work Scheduled In Southern Johnson County

Last updated on Friday, May 16, 2014

(JOHNSON CO.) - As the weather continues to warm up, the number of road construction projects increases.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced that it will restrict travel lanes early next week on U.S. Highway 31 at the twin bridges spanning Sugar Creek in southern Johnson County, located about one-half mile north of State Road 252.

INDOT Spokesman Harry Maginity says that crews will be on site as soon as Monday to set concrete barrier walls and place temporary pavement markings to route motorists to the right lanes of U.S. 31. Traffic will be affected on both the northbound and southbound lanes so that demolition can begin along the outside lane areas of the twin bridges.

Once that portion is finished, Maginity says that workers will begin removing deteriorating bridge rails and bridge deck sections the following week. He added that this work is dependent on the weather.

Maginity says that a single lane will remain open to traffic in each direction throughout the bridge rehabilitation project. Lane widths will be restricted at 11 feet and a speed limit of 45 mph will be enforced.

INDOT officials expect single-lane restrictions to continue through September for this $1.5 million project.
