(UNDATED) - Indiana State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson announced a new grant program that will provide volunteer fire departments with free smoke alarms for Hoosiers.
The program was made possible through a $10,000 grant from State Farm® Insurance.
Last year was a tragic year in Indiana for fire-related deaths. There were a total of 85 reported to the State Fire Marshal in 2013, and so far this year 40 fatalities have been reported.
"A properly placed and functioning smoke alarm can give families the precious extra seconds they need to get to safety," said Greeson.
Greeson hopes to provide 500 smoke alarms with 10-year batteries to volunteer fire departments that may not have the resources to purchase them for their communities.

By law (IC 22-11-18-3.5), all residences in Indiana should have a working smoke alarm. Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the residence, and outside each sleeping area.
Hoosiers should test smoke alarms at least once a month, and change the batteries at least once a year. Smoke alarms should also be replaced about every 10 years.
The two basic types of smoke alarms are ionization alarms and photoelectric alarms. Ionization alarms quickly sense flaming, fast-moving fires. Photoelectric alarms better sense smoldering, smoky fires. You can also purchase dual alarms which are a combination of ionization and photoelectric alarms.
Smoke alarms can be purchased at local hardware, home supply, or general merchandise stores. Some fire departments offer smoke alarms for little to no cost. There are also special alarms for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
