(UNDATED) - Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, including local girls, are stressing the importance of proper retirement of U.S. flags.
The organization has initiated a service project called Girl Scouts for Old Glory.
Girl Scouts have partnered with the Indiana War Memorials Commission and the 500 Festival.
Although flags can be taken to locations that have been set aside for collections in Indianapolis, the most convenient option for people in this area is to deliver the flags to the service center at 1000 North Walnut Street in Bloomington during business hours.
The flag collection will continue through May 23. Tattered flags will also be collected the morning of May 24 during the 500 Festival Parade.
The project allows the Girl Scouts to learn proper flag etiquette, the history of the flag and the proper was to retire a U.S. flag.
The flags will be properly retired during ceremonies conducted this summer during Girl Scout day camps and resident camps throughout central Indiana.
