Early Graduations Ending At BNL

Last updated on Tuesday, May 27, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Mid-term graduations will no longer be an option for Bedford North Lawrence High School students.

The North Lawrence school board voted 7-0 Thursday to discontinue the mid-term graduation option effective next school year. The move came about because of the negative financial impact that mid-term graduations have had on the school corporation's budget.

But Gary Conner, NL superintendent, says the administration also has found a positive result in that school leaders have begun talking with Vincennes University personnel about options that could be available for BNL students to earn dual-credit and work toward an associate degree while still in high school.

North Lawrence is finding that allowing seniors to leave school at the end of the first semester is costing the system money. Conner says last week the financial implication amounted to about $100,000 this year. The reduction in funding has resulted from the fact the state, this school year, began a practice of conducting not just one, but two student count days.

The first count was in September and the second was in February. Student count determines school funding, and the reduced number in the second count translated into less money coming back to the school corporation for the second half of the calendar year.
