Contaminated Area Found At Depot Property

Last updated on Monday, May 19, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Bedford Urban Enterprise Association owns the CSX depot on J Street and has been leasing it to the Lawrence County’s Solid Waste Management District as a recycling center.

However, in December the county purchased the Elliott Stone Company's facilities on Mitchell Road for use as a recycling center and headquarters for the Community Corrections program.

BUEA had offered to donate the facility to the county, but the commissioners declined, explaining the old station requires extensive repairs.

Bedford Plan Director DAn Kirk has been working with Ron Walker of the Solid Waste District to clear the way for the move to Mitchell Road.

The two agreed to split the cost (approximately $2,900) of a Phase One contamination examination of the depot property. EnviroForensics completed the inspection and filed the lengthy report.

They discovered just one small area, about 10 by 20 feet that could be contaminated. Walker and his employees are cleaning it up and then will have the area retested.

BUEA has offered the depot to the city and Mayor Shawna Girgis would consider accepting the depot under certain circumstances.
