Children Airlifted After Paoli Accident

Last updated on Friday, May 16, 2014

(PAOLI) - Two young children were airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital following a two-vehicle accident earlier this week.

The 7-year-old Riley Butler of Hardinsburg suffered internal head injuries in the crash. The girl, 8-year-old Erin Mitchell, also of Hardinsburg, suffered a broken femur and was taken to Louisville after first being transported to Indiana University Health Paoli Hospital.

According to an Orange County Police report, Butler was in a 2007 Jeep Wrangler driven by 17-year-old Katelynn Coleman, of Hardinsburg. She suffered seat belt abrasions but refused medical treatment.

Miller was a front-seat passenger in a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado extended cab truck driven by 46-year-old Scott Mitchell, Hardinsburg. He suffered a knee injury and was taken by ambulance to IU Health Paoli Hospital.

Another passenger in the Silverado, 9-year-old Evan Mitchell, suffered minor bleeding from his head. He bit his tongue and was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Paoli.

The accident was reported at 4:55 p.m. Tuesday on Oak Grove Road, south of the intersection with County Road 775 South.

Police say, Coleman was talking to Butler, when she reached down to get a phone cord and looked back up and realized she she had drifted across the center line.

She told police she could not avoid striking Mitchell's vehicle.

Mitchell, told police, he saw Coleman's vehicle top the hump in the road and it was on the correct side of the road, but then the Jeep suddenly veered into his lane. He told police he looked for a way to avoid impact but did not have time to react.

Both drivers and all passengers were wearing seat belts. Police say the airbags deployed in both vehicles.

Coleman was cited for driving left of center.
