Brown County Schools Receive Duke Grant

Last updated on Monday, May 5, 2014

(BROWN CO.) -The Duke Energy Foundation has awarded $27,495 to the Brown County School Corporation to purchase and install a WeatherBug weather station, enabling the school to join the “SkyTrak 13 WeatherBug Schools Program.”

Duke Energy spokesman Lew Middleton says the weather station provides meteorological data for broadcast and online use. It is also used to enhance science, technology and math school curriculums using the WeatherBug Achieve program. The program helps students better understand the science of meteorology.

Another important aspect of the program is the lightning sensor and outdoor alerting system that will help keep students safe during outdoor activities, practices and games.

"We are excited to give our students this opportunity to help bring science to life," said Brown County Schools Superintendent David Shaffer. "The weather station and software will give students the chance to further their understanding about weather and climate using current technology."

"Duke Energy continues to explore new and innovative methods for promoting interest in science, technology, engineering and math disciplines," said Chip Orben, Duke Energy community relations manager for Brown County. "The future of our economy hinges in large part on producing workers with these STEM skills."
