(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Police received a call Sunday morning from a 23-year-old man who wanted to go to jail.

According to Bloomington Police Sgt. Joe Crider, police had no reason to take the man to jail, nor could they determine why he was calling.

At 8:35 a.m. police received a second call from the man again insisting that police take him to jail.

Officers went to an apartment in the 200 block of South Madison Street and found the man holding a 10-inch kitchen knife. Crider says the man refused to drop the knife despite several commands to do so.

Eventually, the man dropped the knife and went into the bathroom of the apartment and grabbed several pill bottles. He proceeded to take an unknown quantity of those pills and was taken to IU Health Bloomington for treatment.

A female witness told police the man was having a mental breakdown and was emotionally disturbed.

No charges have been filed.
