Belly Buster And Ugly Duck Competition Set For May 23

Last updated on Monday, May 12, 2014

(BEDFORD) - The Belly Buster competition is back and some ugly ducks will be receiving some great prizes in the upcoming Ugly Duck Derby.

Dozens of prizes have been donated for the duck race, set for May 23 at Thornton Park's John Lowery Pool. The event, from 6-9 p.m., is a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County.

Prizes include a week's stay in a Daytona Beach, Fla., resort, a weekend in Gatlinburg, designer sunglasses, tickets to see Indianapolis Colts and Indiana University football games, admission to Indiana Beach, a $500 gift card for service or tires from Bedford Ford, one pizza a month for a year from Grecco's and numerous gift cards for food, movies, landscaping and other items.

Anyone wishing to add to the list of donations can call either the club, Laura Short or Jim Sowders.

To win one of those prizes all you have to do is "adopt" a duck for $5 or five for $20.

Winners will be determined when hundreds of ducks are dropped from the top of the water slide and race to the finish line. The first ducks plucked from the water will be the prize winners.
Ducks can be at the B&G Club, Parks Department, Bedford Ford, Bailey's Flowers, office of Dr. Jim Sowders or any board member.

Other activities at the Duck Derby will include a celebrity Belly Buster contest, Big Splash contest featuring kids in grades 6-12, an inflatable duck race between members of the Bedford North Lawrence boys and girls basketball teams and a Duck Derby hat show. Also new this year, sponsors can purchase a table for $200 to watch all the fun from a prime spot.

The event's Facebook page lets people vote for their favorite Belly Buster contestant. The winner gets a bye into the finals as will the diver who raises the most money via duck sales and/or donations.

The Ugly Duck Derby raised about $30,000 last year.
