(BEDFORD) - A 19-year-old Bedford man was sentenced to prison Wednesday on felony charges of burglary.

Seth McFarland was sentenced by Judge Michael Robbins in Lawrence Superior Court I.

McFarland had pled guilty to burglary and the charges of theft and residential entry were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

Judge Robbins sentenced McFarland to six years at the Indiana Department of Correction with three years suspended, two of which will be on supervised probation with the remaining year on unsupervised probation.

McFarland received credit for 91 days already served and will participate in the purposeful incarceration program. He was ordered to participate in ADAPT and to find a job within 60 days of his release.

McFarland was charged with breaking into his adoptive stepfather's home and stealing two handguns on Jan. 23.

Public Defender Bruce Andis told Robbins that McFarland had a rough childhood. He was 8 years old when he was adopted and his adoptive father died shortly after the adoption. Andis said if put on house arrest, McFarland could work, he would abide by house arrest and probation terms and be able to get rid of a substance abuse problem.

Prosecutor Michelle Woodward argued that in the assessment conducted by the probation department, McFarland scored high in four out of seven areas, he had criminal history that included a juvenile case and he had betrayed the trust of a family member.

Judge Robbins agreed with the state's concern of McFarland being a high risk assessment and said the court had received a memorandum from community corrections stating McFarland was not approved for the program.
