(BEDFORD) - Two county races attracted a lot of attention Tuesday.
Six people entered the race for sheriff: Republicans Mike Branham, Neil Hayes and Sam Shaw and Democrats Bill Allen, Darin S. Kinser and Roland Stockton. Winning the Republican nomination was Mike Branham and Bill Allen took the Democrat nomination. Current Sheriff Sam Craig has served two consecutive terms and, by state law, he could not run again.
Republicans also had contested races for the Lawrence County Council in Districts 1 and 2, and for the Lawrence County Commissioner seat in District 1. Republicans running for County Commissioner District 1 were: Rodney Fish, Chris May and David "Bud" Nicholson. Incumbent Chris May claimed the nomination on Tuesday.
For County Council District 1 was Keith Dillman and Scott Smith. Incumbent Keith Dillman claimed the most votes on Tuesday.
Running for County Council District 2 were Raymond Briggs and Michael Wright with Wright pulling in the most votes.
Several people also filed for the 9th Congressional District seat currently held by Republican Todd Young. On the Republican ballot were Mark Jones and Kathy Lowe Heil, and on the Democratic ballot, Bill Bailey, James McClure Jr., J.S. Miller and William Joseph Thomas. This fall Incumbent Todd Young will face Bill Bailey.
According to the voter registration office, 31,936 people are registered to vote in Lawrence County this spring. Clerk Treasurer Myron Rainey says that is up from 31,700 in the 2006 primary and 30,223 in the 2010 primary.
According to courthouse records, 1,151 people cast ballots before today's election.
Rainey says 737 people took advantage of early voting hours at the courthouse, and another 67 cast ballots with a travel board. (The travel board goes to those who are not able to make it to the polls.)
In addition, 393 absentee ballots were mailed to voters who are out of the county and requested them. But Rainey said 46 of those mailed ballots had not made it back to the courthouse by late Monday afternoon.
