Washington Planning Bicentennial Celebration

Last updated on Thursday, April 24, 2014

(WASHINGTON) - In addition to the Indiana Bicentennial Celebration, the City of Washington will also celebrate 200 years in 2016 and officials are looking for people to help with planning.

The first parcel of land ever purchased in Washington was bought for 50 dollars on November 13, 1816.

Mayor Joe Wellman, has organized a committee to discuss ideas for celebrating the city's bicentennial. Out of that committee, several other sub-committees were formed to brainstorm themes, events, logos, city branding, advertising and public displays.

Officials hope to coordinate with Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center, which will celebrate 75 years in 2016.

Wellman says the Bicentennial should also be a time to look to the future as well as celebrate Washington's heritage.

That group will begin considering projects for improvement to quality of life, health, education and private community investment.

Anyone who would like to help with the planning call Terri Kelso at 812-254-7770 or Don Spillman at 812-254-0899.
