(WASHINGTON) - A Washington man has pleaded guilty Monday for his role in the death of 17-year-old Devan Burris.
28-year-old Craig Streete will be sentenced to 15 years in prison according to the plea agreement in which Streete agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery resulting in serious bodily injury.
Streete admitted he took Devan Burris and Donald Kruchten to the drug deal on December 6th that ended when Burris was shot.
According to the agreement filed in Daviess Superior Court, Streete will serve two years in the state Department of Corrections, 10 years in the Daviess County Security Center on work release and the final three years on home detention. He will also serve 15 years of probation after serving his time in jail.
Streete admitted to Judge Dean Sobecki that he was to receive a tank of gas for Burris and Kruchten to meet Logan Evans and Lucas Benjamin that night to make a drug deal and that Burris and Kruchten were planning on robbing the two other men.
Streete testified that he was at Burris' house the night of Dec. 6 and witnessed him ask a friend for a set of brass knuckles and a gun. But the owner of the gun refused to give it to Burris so Burris took a pellet gun that looked like a handgun. Burris was to meet Evans and Benjamin to purchase a gram of meth for $100. Streete and Burris then went and picked up Kruchten and drove to the parking lot of Ebenezer Baptist Church on Oak Grove Road. Once there Streete stayed in the car and was texting his girlfriend.
Benjamin alleges Burris and Kruchten grabbed him by the hood of his jacket and tried to pull him out the car. Benjamin says the man had a gun pointed at his face and began hitting him.
He told police as he was being pulled from the car, when he heard a gunshot and then everyone began screaming. Streete also heard the shot and then saw Burris step back and Kruchten walking back to the car, yelling they needed to go to the hospital. Burris had suffered a gunshot to the neck.
Then Benjamin and Lucas fled the scene. Kruchten helped load Burris into Streete's gold Cadillac and they took him to the Daviess Community Hospital where they left Burris in the emergency room parking lot. Kruchten went inside to tell medical personnel that someone was in the parking lot bleeding. Then both men fled the scene. Burris died at the hospital.
The two men then went to Kruchten's house where the cleaned the blood out of Streete's Cadillac.
Kruchten is facing a charge of murder and two counts of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. An initial hearing was held Thursday where Kruchten indicated he would retain an attorney. He is being held without bond at the Daviess County Security Center.
Two other people have been sentenced in connection with the death of Burris,
18-year-old Logan Evans was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder of Burris. He pled guilty to the crime in February, but maintains he did not mean to shoot the teen.
19-year-old Lucas Benjamin of Washington was sentenced to 30 years in prison in connection with the death. He pleaded guilty to charges of assisting a criminal and attempted dealing in meth as part of a negotiated plea agreement.
Two others charged in relation to the shooting are also facing court proceedings. 14-year-old Wyatt Byers is being charged with obstruction of justice for hiding the gun used to kill Burris. Byers could be sentenced to 90 days in a juvenile detention center.
18-year-old Heaven Berry was charged with providing assistance to another who committed the crime of murder. She let her cousin, Evans, hide at her apartment after the murder.
